Abstract

The 600 MeV vector and tensor polarized deuteron beams of Saturne were used to measure vector analyzing powers Ay, tensor analyzing powers Ayy, and vector spin transfer coefficients Kyy′ for scattering at energy losses with quasielastic kinematics. Results at a momentum transfer of 500 MeV/c to meet the formal conditions for incoherent quasielastic scattering, are presented for targets of CH2, CD2, C, Ca, and Pb. These deuteron scattering observables are combined through expressions derived from the plane wave impulse approximation to isolate the nuclear isoscalar spin responses for spin-transverse and spin-longitudinal modes. Together with results from previous experiments, these responses will provide for the first time a complete mapping of all the possible spin/isospin responses of some standard nuclear examples at standard momentum transfers.
