Abstract

We have measured the properties of two avalanche photodiodes for possible use in conjunction with scintillating fibers as charged particle detectors.

The quantities measured so far are the gain of the APD's, the amplitude distribution of pulses from particles through the fibers, and the efficiency of detecting these particles.

The preliminary results obtained indicate the importance of the choice of associated electronics and good optical coupling. The results obtained so far have been measured at room temperature and near liquid nitrogen temperatures.
