Abstract

Compact silicon-tungsten calorimeters are used in the LEP e+e collider to monitor luminosity and particle background rates at the four interaction points and to measure the degree of transverse polarization of the circulating electron beam. The article describes the function and the technical realization of the different detectors and presents first operational experience as well as some physics results obtained.
