Abstract

A statistical theory of pion-induced nuclear reactions is presented, and developed for application in the energy region of the Δ(1232) πN resonance. The dynamical picture is based on three types of channels: π-scattering channels, Δ-channels, and absorption channels. The statistical assumptions lead to a transport equation for the Δ in the nuclear target, from which the inclusive cross sections for inelastic scattering and absorption of pions may be obtained. The theory is more general than various semiclassical approaches, but can be shown to go over to a Boltzmann-like equation in the appropriate limits.
