2012, Molecular and Cellular EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :It has been postulated that activin A modulates the proliferation and differentiation of several cell types involved in atherogenesis, notably endothelial cells (EC), macrophages and SMC. In this context it inhibits the propagation of human EC (McCarthy and Bicknell, 1993) and it enhances the differentiation of monocytic cells into macrophages (Yamada et al., 1992) and inhibits foam-cell formation (Kozaki et al., 1997). The role of activin A in inducing proliferation of SMC is controversially discussed at the moment.
