    Using methods to identify the N-terminal amino acids, it was shown that VLDL and chylomicrons contained proteins whose sequence terminated with serine and threonine, whereas the protein of LDL and HDL ended in glutamic and aspartic acid. A protein phospholipid complex was isolated from human VLDL by Gustafson and colleagues49 containing N-terminal serine and threonine, and was called apolipoprotein C, with an estimated molecular weight over 60,000 D.50 The author working with Donald Fredrickson and Robert Levy was later able to solubilize the proteins of VLDL and separate ApoB from three smaller proteins using gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography.51,52 These apolipoproteins were found to have serine and threonine as N-terminal amino acids and to be surprisingly small.
