Comparative biochemistry of deamination of l-amino acids in elasmobranch and teleost fish

Abstract

  • 1.

    1. A study on the comparative biochemistry of natural amino acids has been carried out on an elasmobranch (Scyllium canicula) and two teleosts (Mugil cephalus and Gobius niger jozo). Evidence is presented of deamination in these vertebrates for the first time.

    2. Brain, liver and kidney of the above species have been found to deaminate various l-amino acids to varying degrees.

    3. l-aspartic acid and l-histidine were generally found to be the most active amino acids on the basis of ammonia production in tissue homogenates The activity on l-aspartate is worthy of note, in that it has never before been found in animal tissue.

  • 4.

    4. On the basis of results obtained, the biological significance of deamination of l-amino acids is discussed in respect to the different nitrogen catabolism in the two classes of fish (elasmobranchs and teleosts).
