Abstract

Spin relaxation of iminoxyl radicals in solid matrix (frozen solutions) has been considered in the first part of the review. The distance between the spins of the radical and the other paramagnetic centre (PC) can be determined from the change of the transverse- and especially from the longitudinal relaxation times of the radical due to the dipole-dipole interaction between the radical and the PC. The study of structure of haemoglobin, myosin and nitrogenase by the method of spin labels has been discussed.

In the second part spin relaxation of solutions of spin labelled proteins in the presence of inert paramagnetics readily diffusing in the solution (so called “spin probes”) has been considered. The influence of the probes on labels transverse relaxation depends on the frequency of collisions between a label and a probe, and therefore this approach can be used for quantitative study of the factors which effect the frequency of collisions: microviscosity, steric hundrances, the presence of electrostatic charges.

However, currently both approaches are restricted to relatively shorter distances due to the short Tm of the spin label at room temperatures (Meyer et al., 2015; Yang, Liu, et al., 2012). A promising potential alternative is to use relaxation enhancement to measure interspin distances, the principles of which have been developed in early literature (Bloembergen, Purcell, & Pound, 1948; Bloembergen, Shapiro, Pershan, & Artman, 1959; Kulikov & Likhtenstein, 1977). Briefly, the relaxation rate of a slowly-relaxing spin species, ca.
