Abstract

The i.r. spectra of each of the 24 uni-unimolecular hydrogen bonded complexes formed by phenol, 4-Me, 4-F, 4-Cl, 4-Br and 4-I phenol with pyridine, 4-Me, 4-Et and 4-Ph pyridine have been measured over the range 450-80 cm−1. An assignment of all the observed bands is made, and in all the complexes an intermolecular band distinguished, which is ascribed to stretching of the hydrogen bond νσ. The frequency is compared with the shift of the OH stretching frequency Δνs, which has also been measured for each complex.
