Abstract
SEVERAL recent results have led to a widely held view that the male specific antigen (MSA) is coded for by a structural gene on the Y chromosome, and because of this it is frequently termed H-Y (refs 1 and 2). Although a good case has been put forward for this conclusion, there are some data that conflict with this view and some arguments against the notion. These are presented here as a reminder that, as is so often the case with biological experiments, the Scottish verdict “not proven” holds.
