Abstract

KELLAWAY1 described the Burtle Beds as “residual masses of glacial sand and gravel (‘Burtle Beds’), (which) rise out of the marshes at Catcott Burtle, Weston Zoyland and Othery”. Kidson and Haynes2 supported the earlier view of Bulleid and Jackson3 that the deposits are of marine origin and of interglacial rather than glacial age and provenance. They concluded that “any suggestion that the Burtle Beds are ice transported is quite untenable. A fluvioglacial origin is …..so unlikely as to be unacceptable…. ”.
