Abstract
IT has been shown that the diffusivity of oxygen, glucose and carbon dioxide through blood plasma decreases with increased plasma protein concentrations1,2. Navari et al.2 and Connor et al.3 have further demonstrated that the diffusivity of oxygen and glucose is markedly affected by the concentrations of these proteins in human plasma within their normal physiological ranges. For example, an increase of the concentration of albumin from 2.0 to 5.0 gm/100 ml. at 37° C causes almost a 50% decrease in the diffusivity of oxygen. Since the concentrations of albumin and the globulins, as well as cholesterol, change with various pathological conditions and with ageing of “normal” subjects, subsequent changes in diffusion may have physiological consequences.
