Direct writing of nanometer scale structures on glassy metals by the scanning tunneling microscope

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für Physik B Condensed Matter

Abstract

The scanning tunneling microscope has been used to write complex patterns consisting of cones or lines with dimensions down to 3 nm on surfaces of glassy metals. It is shown that the size of the written features can be controlled during fabrication. Potential applications for mass storage including magnetic data storage are outlined.
