The idea of creating an international organization for biological control will be 40 years old this year, and the success of the initiative is obvious if we consider the number of scientists (about 700) involved in Commissions, Working Parties and Study Groups of IOBC/WPRS. More than one thousand pages are published each year (Entomophaga andBulletins), and the training courses for young research workers organized in cooperation with the European Community have proved to be extremely useful. As a result, the Executive Committee of the West Palaearctic Regional Section has asked the author, who has been intimately connected with this development, to summarize the early steps which led to IOBC.
