The evaluation of progenies of meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis L.) in monoculture and in mixture with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)

Summary

Different progenies of meadow fescue were examined for their competitive ability towards perennial ryegrass. Large differences in competitive ability were found among and within the investigated progenies, so that breeding for this characteristic seems possible. The progenies ranked themselves in the same order when counting the number of tillers per plant in mixture as when recording the dry matter yield.

A mixture of perennial ryegrass-meadow fescue can be as productive as a pure stand of perennial ryegrass.

If the number of plants per progeny is too small, differences among the progenies do not appear.
