Abstract

Very high dtμ molecular formation rates for epithermal (i.e., not thermalized) muonic tritium atoms have been observed in experiments and are predicted by theory. The present detailed analysis shows qualitative agreement although further calculations will be needed to reach a complete understanding of all processes involved. The importance of epithermal effects for a correct description of muon-catalyzed fusion phenomena has been confirmed.
