Abstract
A spherical container of the Marinelli type has been constructed. The efficiency of counting using this on a germanium detector has been compared to the efficiencies of other geometrical arrangements as a function of energy. The sphere shows the best relative efficiency. It is suggested that the large increases in efficiency which earlier work had implied were available by simply optimising the dimensions of the conventional Marinelli beaker are unlikely to be attainable.
