Summary
The reduction kinetics of tetrakis(N,N′-diethylimidazolidine-2-thione)trans-dioxo-osmium(2+) perchlorate with imidazolidine-2-selone and itsN-methyl-N′-ethyl derivatives have been investigated in H2O/EtOH (1∶1 vol) in the presence of perchloric acid. The selones give a fast substitution at the metal which is subsequently reduced to osmium(III).
The kinetic equation is that also found for OsO4 as substrate and the specific rate constants and activation parameters of the two reactions are practically the same.
A mechanism involving the formation of an intermediate species through an equilibrium is tentatively proposed.
