Abstract
High-spin states in156Er have been populated using the (α, 8n) and (16O, 4n) reactions. In the ground state band a strong backbending effect was observed atI π=12+. Four states of a secondK=0 band with spins 9, 11, 13 and 15 were found. This second band depopulates completely into the 8+ and 10+ members of the ground state band. This is explained by the fact that the upper states of this second band are yrast states and that this band crosses the (gsb)-line atI ≃11.

The authors are indebted to Mr. A. Neskakis for assistance in the collection of the data, to Mr. H. M. Jäger for his substantial technical assistance, to Mr. Z. Seres for making available a computer program for analysis of coincidence spectra, to the Jülich cyclotron operating crew, and to Professors A. Faessler and O. Schult for interesting discussions. The mass separator group in Jülich is thanked for preparing the enriched160Dy oxide. We should also particularly like to thank Professor J. Vervier, his colleagues, and the cyclotron group at the University of Louvain-La-Neuve for providing us with beam time, and for assistance during the course of the measurements there.
