Summary

A review of the recent developments (literature and own investigations) in the study of lysozymes is given in the paper. After a short resumé of the lysozyme content of different tissues, fluids etc., the chemical structure, methods of purification, isolation and determination of several lysozymes, the biological properties of these substances (antigenic nature, enzyme activity, polycationeffects, the influence on phagocytosis and pyrogenicity) will be considered. Then the problems of the correlations between lysozyme and other biologically active substances will be discussed. And lastly the role of lysozyme as an aid in the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases deserves mention.
