Small intestine suction biopsy in childhood: Technique, complications, and significance in the diagnosis of intestinal disorders

Summary

Special modifications of biopsy instruments have been developed for peroral intestinal biopsy in children. The risk of intestinal hemorrhage or perforation is low with a proved method, and biopsy is justified in any of the case where it is indicated. As the procedure requires only a short time it is not too annoying for the children. The investigation of small intestinal biopsy specimens is of great diagnostic value in coeliac disease, disaccharide-intolerance and other rare forms of malabsorption.
