Summary
The normal range of the Hb F concentration was determined in 641 healthy adults. The values showed a logarithmic distribution with a mean of 0.46 and a 2 s range of 0.21–0.98% Hb F.
In a cooperative study 355 cases of acquired anemias of non neoplastic origin were examined. Concentrations between 1–9% Hb F were observed in 66% of the cases of aplastic anemia. Only 23% of the hemolytic anemias and 14% of the anemias due to chronic infections had Hb F values above the normal range. No statistically significant Hb F increase was found in iron deficiency anemia and in anemias associated with renal diseases.
