Summary
Encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus infected DBA/2 mice develop a diabetes mellitus-like disease. Many animals survive the acute viral infection and exhibit hyperglycemia and glycosuria for varying periods thereafter. Accumulations of homogeneous, electron dense, basement membrane-like material are observed in the mesangium of the glomerulus of these animals as early as three months after inoculation. The peripheral capillary basement membranes are not affected. Since the alterations are not found in uninfected animals, it is assumed that the abnormal metabolic state or the virus infection, or both processes, are responsible for the glomerular changes. Further investigation will be required to elucidate the pathogenesis of this obscure lesion.
