Summary
The authors have undertaken chemical, biochemical and metal dissolution analysis of fluid removed from the joint in 12 loose hip replacements. They conclude that it is an inflammatory exudate with perhaps some immunological significance. A small amount of metal elements were seen, but there was no evidence of overt wear.
