Summary
Leucopenia was frequently found in iron deficiency anemias; there was no correlation between the numbers of leucocytes and the values of hemoglobin or serum iron values. The thrombocyte count was changed only in few cases.
The changes in blood cells are interpreted as a manifestation of a general reduction in iron-containing enzyme systems, particularly leading to damages in tissues with a high cellular turnover and a great demand of energy.
