Summary
The ultrastructural localization of alcaline phosphatase (a.p.) is studied in placental villi from central and peripheral areas of human term-placental placentons.
Our earlier light-microscopical results [7] concerning the different activity of a.p. in the two areas are confirmed. It is demonstrated by ultrahistochemical methods, that villi of the central region show activity of a.p. mainly in the membrane of superficial microvilli.
Villi, situated in the periphery, showing besides apical syncytial a.p. activity alsobasal enzyme activity in light microscopical studies, are demonstrated to possess a.p.-activity also in the membrane ofbasal syncytial microvilli.
The meaning of this membrane-situated activity of a.p. for the transport of substrates is discussed.
