Summary
A four-engined passenger-plane, Bristol-Britannia, was thrown against the rockwalls of the “Glungezer” mountain near Innsbruck, whereby all passengers and staff were killed.
The detection and medical examination if the victims presented special problems, because the remaining parts of the plane as well as bodies had been, spread all over and covered by a snow-slide elicted through the crush.
Every one of the 83 victims could be identified; for this rather difficult work the very exact records of their dental status played an essential part. In one case the reported diagnosis of “Hodgkin's disease” proved the victim's identity.
Many of the terribly injured or mutilated bodies were almost completely undressed.
Furthermore, on many bodies, also on the mutilated ones, large haematomas on the hands and feet were found, despite of the fact, that death proably occured within a few seconds.
The importance of proper experience and the close collaboration between flightpolice, the investigation officials and the physicians who had to examine and clarify the accident as a whole has been stressed.
