Summary
A reaction for the detection of choline esterase is carried out in serial sections of early chick germ disks. Polyethylenglycol is used as embedding material.
-
1.
In the unincubated blastoderm and the “primitive streakstadium” (up to the appearance of the head process) the ectoderm shows single choline-esterase-positive cells. They migrate to the entoderm and mesoderm where they lose their choline esterase activity. The active cells are distributed irregularly over the ectoderm. The primitive streakand node do not show a higher number of active cells than the rest of the ectoderm. These findings reveal a mechanism unknown up to now, at least as far as the development of the yolk-entoderm, the mesoderm, and the definitive entoderm is concerned.
-
2.
After the formation of the germ layers, choline esterase is again observed in the cranial part of the germ disk. The activity is localized in all over the entoderm and mesoderm, where as the caudal part of the germ disk remains inactive. This enzyme-activity is related to the movement of cells during the formation of the embryonic body placed cranial to the primitive node.
-
3.
The results of the investigation show, that the choline esterase activity in the chick germ disk is connected to an active movement of the reacting cells and cell groups.
