Summary
If a drop of rancid oil and chloroform is immersed in water and n/10 NaOH solution is allowed to diffuse against two opposite poles of the drop at the same time and rate, the drop constricts and divides in two along the equator.
This division is due to decrease in surface tension following soap formation at the poles, or relative increase in surface tension at the equator. Contrary toRobertson, a decrease in surface tension along the equator does not divide a drop.
