Summary
Electron microscopic studies of macrophages of the granuloma, produced in rats with an intramuscular injection of turpentine-oil, revealed many inclusions, among them many lamellar bodies. Larger, loosely layered membraneous bodies were rarer. The structural differences between these two forms reflect their dissimilar chemical or physical constituents. Because of the inclusions, some quantitative and qualitative differences exist compared with other models of inflammation. This fact is explained by the great toxicity of the turpentine-oil, which damages not only the preexisting structures but also the newly forming granulation tissue.
