Summary
An acute necrosis of the rat testis, induced by one subcutaneous injection of cadmium chloride, is followed by inflammation and repair. Regeneration begins in the tunica albuginea and spreads into the interstitium towards the centre. It is associated with a return of the activity of hydrolytic and oxidative enzymes that are greatly reduced in the necrotic testis. The revival of the enzymatic activities is caused by the proliferating tissue, but is not a specific quality of the testicular tissue, as is obvious from the markedly changed isoenzymatic fractions. The necrotic germinal epithelium shows no attempt to regenerate. This supports the former suggestion that cadmium ion acts directly as a toxin on the germinal epithelium.
