α1− Polymorphism of a Bantu population: Description of a mew allele PiL

Summary

The Pi phenotypes of 132 individuals of a Bantu population living in Zaire were examined. The MM phenotype was the most common, as in all other populations studied up to now. This paper deals with a new allele, PiL, identified by two-dimensional techniques, and its mode of inheritance is demonstrated. In this small sample, there is a conspicuous absence of PiZ, the allele responsible for such severe diseases as emphysema in adults and cirrhosis in children.
