Cytoplasmic oxidation activity in cell division processes in the tumours of the nervous system and in their tissue cultures

Acta Neurochirurgica Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

By improving a combined dehydrogenase-Feulgen method, the oxidation activity of the dividing cells in tumours of the nervous system and in their tissue cultures was studied.

Our results can be summarized as follows:

  1. I.

Cells in typical mitosis belonging to undifferentiated and typically differentiated tumours showed a constant increase in the oxidation activity in comparison with the surrounding cells of the same type.

  2. II.

On the contrary, cells in atypical mitosis of the atypical tumours never showed an increase in the oxidation activity in comparison with the surrounding cells of the same type.

Likewise, no increase in the oxidation activity was present in parenchymal cells in amitotic division.

  3. III.

In the 12–20 day tissue cultures the metabolic activities of the dividing and resting cells remained unmodified in comparison with the cells of the tumour of origin. Typical mitoses and amitoses were found in mesodermal cells too: the oxidation activity appeared to be increased in the cells showing typical mitoses and remained unmodified during the amitotic process.

These and other collateral data are discussed.

  1. I.

  1. I.

  1. I
