Summary
By a long-term application of thyreotropine a morphological reaction of this hormone on the related nuclei of the hypothalamus was attained at with dogs and guinea-pigs. In this manner a connection between the thyreotropine partial function of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland and special regions of the small-celled hypothalamus and, in addition, circumscribed areas of the thalamus could be established without any local lesion. The reactions of the nerve cells consist of a shrinking, acidophily and hyperargyrophily of nucleus and pericaryon. They are mainly found in the hypothalamic nuclear areas of the nucleus infundibularis, nucleus praemamillaris and regio praeoptica, in the nucleus septalis medialis and also in the nucleus paraventricularis of the thalamus.
The concordance of these findings with those after an application of adrenocorticotropine, gonadotropine, and prolactine may be due to a unitary regulating system of the tropic hormones within the diencephalon.
