Abstract

In this iron source a long stick (“pencil”) made a sample. By means of an electromagnet the stick is tightened against the heated filament (thermoanode) in the form of a net. The pressure of the stick on the thermoanode is controlled by means of the feed-back system.

An ion source for low energy ion scattering spectrometry

The alkali ions have been of interest in low energy ion scattering experiments because of their low neutralization probabilities. A method to produce alkali ions has been developed based on the surface ionization technique. A modified surface ionization source uses a sawtooth type sample filament to maintain the slow evaporation of the alkali samples doped on it, and a flat ribbon ionization filament in parallel to it to ionize the alkali vapour. Different alkali compounds have been tried, and high ion currents in the μ A range with the life span of more than 20 h have been obtained using the beta-eucryptite compounds. The intensity of the ion beam can be maintained at a constant value when the operation of the ion source reaches the steady state in less than 30 min. Most ions were singly charged atomic ions with energy spread in the order of 1 eV.
The application of the pencil thermoemission ion source for determination of the isotopic ratio 7Li: 6Li in a monocrystalline LiF sample

A new type of thermoemission ion source has been used for determining the isotopic ratio ⁷Li: ⁶Li in a monocrystalline LiF sample. In this source, an electromagnet introduces a pencil-shaped sample, of approximate dimensions 3 mm × 3 mm × 10 mm, inside a helical thermoanode. Such a source ensures a long-lasting, continuous and stable emission of ions. The isotopic ratio determined is constant with time because no enrichment of the sample with the heavier isotope has been reported. Because of other discrimination factors of the mass spectrometer, the value of the isotopic ratio ⁷Li:⁶Li determined 12.74±0.04, should be taken only as an approximation.
Mass spectrometric investigation of the pencil thermoemission ion source

On the basis of the experiments described in their previous papers, the authors have determined by means of a simple mass spectrometer some basic characteristics of a newly developed type of thermoemission ion source. In this source, a pencil-shaped sample of approximate dimensions 3 × 3 × 10 mm is pressed against the tungsten thermoanode by means of an electromagnet. Such a source enables a long-lasting, continuous emission of ions. As one of the applications of this type of ion source, the authors have determined the isotopic ratio ³⁹K/⁴¹K in a crystalline KCl sample. Due to the parameters of the mass spectrometer employed, the value of this ratio should be taken only as an approximation.
