Abstract

In a cosmic ray isotope experiment a stack of plastic nuclear track detectors will be used for range measurements. The stack consists of 440 foils of cellulose nitrate covering an area of 120 cm × 120 cm. Thus the scanning of some hundreds of square meters of these plastic foils for particle tracks will be necessary. We developed a technique based on digital picture analysis to scan large areas of plastic detectors for etched-through particle tracks. To test the experimental method a stack of smaller size (60 cm 7times; 60 cm) was exposed to cosmic radiation in a balloon flight. Results of the analysis are presented.
