Abstract

Through the time differential perturbed angular correlation investigation of the system In in Ag, the applicability of the technique to the study of the internal oxidation process is proved. An unusually high electric quadrupole interaction for this system is found.

In this paper, the beginnings of the Laboratory of Nuclear Spectroscopy and Hyperfine Interactions (LENIH) at the Department of Physics of the National University of La Plata and the evolution of the principal ideas involved and the main goals achieved are reviewed. Special attention is devoted to the relationships between the LENIH members and the international scientific community through the years, since they have been fundamental for the existence and development of the applications of hyperfine interactions in Solid State Physics at La Plata. A scheme of the socio-political situation in which the LENIH grew and could consolidate its actual position as well as the diversified research lines developed at present are also described.
Surface oxidation of copper observed by perturbed angular correlation and Rutherford backscattering

The oxidation process of copper was investigated by the Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and perturbed angular correlation (PAC) techniques. The variation of the oxygen concentration below the surface was analysed by RBS. The PAC method was applied to obtain a microscopic picture of the oxidation process. Some 10¹² radioactive ¹¹¹In⁺ ions were implanted at 400 keV into copper foils, which were oxidized at a fixed oxygen pressure either isothermally or isochronally at increasing temperature (T_ox = 300–1200 K). The PAC spectra were taken at room temperature. The hyperfine interaction parameters were compared with those found after ¹¹¹In implantation into Cu₂O and CuO pressed powder samples, respectively oxide layers on copper foils. The broad frequency distribution observed during the oxidation process is suggested to be due to a complex formed by indium, oxygen and copper vacancies in the Cu₂O lattice.
Electric field gradients of 111Cd in the copper oxides CuO and Cu<inf>2</inf>O

Perturbed angular correlation measurements were performed after ¹¹¹In implantation into CuO and Cu₂O powder samples and 1 μm thick Cu₂O surface layers. The quadrupole hyperfine interaction of ¹¹¹Cd was studied in isochronal annealing cycles at 370–1170 K covering the CuO→Cu₂O phase transition. The electric field gradients obtained for ¹¹¹Cd on substitutional Cu lattice sites were associated with the repective oxygen coordinations. Annealing of Cu₂O surface layers on copper foils resulted in a texture with the efg pointing preferentially out of the surface plane.

The oxidation of 10¹² radioactive ¹¹¹In ions implanted at 500 keV into the f.c.c. metals silver, copper, aluminium and platinum was studied with the perturbed angular of the induced radiation damage the metals were isochronally heated in oxygen at 200 mbar and at an oxidation temperature T_ox of 300–1200 K. In all cases we found ¹¹¹In in two microsurroundings: regular cubic lattice sites and InO complexes. For aluminium, silver and platinum the PAC parameters suggest a similarly structured object, where the InO bond length is proportional to the metal-oxygen bond length of the corresponding metal oxide. Temperature-dependent PAC parameters for copper were tentatively attributed to the reaction Cu→Cu₂O→CuO. Comparison of the present data with recent PAC results on ¹¹¹InInO₃ excludes precipitation of In₂O₃ in the investigated cases.

Decoration of radiation damage in silver by oxygen

The process of internal oxidation of indium in silver in the presence of correlated and uncorrelated radiation damage (preoxidation, ion implantation) was studied by means of the TDPAC technique. Isothermal annealing functions of oxygen decorated defects containing ¹¹¹In, oxygen and vacancies were measured. These molecular-like complexes have been found only if ¹¹¹In is implanted into the preoxidized foil, but not if oxygen is implanted into a ¹¹¹In doped sample.
