Abstract

Slow ion production cross sections for collisions of H⁺₃ and D⁺₃ ions with H₂ and D₂ have been measured at collision energies between 100 eV and 500 eV. The values vary from 2 × 10^-17 cm² to 6 × 10^-17 cm². The smaller cross sections for D₃ projectiles may be explained as an internal energy effect.

Collisional dissociation of HD<sup>+</sup><inf>2</inf> molecular ions in H<inf>2</inf> in the energy range 1.5-5.0 keV

Collision-induced dissociation of HD⁺₂ on H₂ has been studied over the energy range of 1.5–5.0 keV. The angular distributions of the dissociation fragments H⁺, D⁺, HD⁺ and D⁺₂ were measured at six energies in this range, and the absolute total cross sections for their production were calculated. At an energy of 3.75 keV the velocity distribution for each fragment has been obtained, and as a result of the inspection of their structures, some conclusions about the dissociation process were derived. Substantial differences were observed between the distributions of the D⁺ and H⁺ fragments exhibiting a strong isotopic effect.
