Nuclear cooling in PrIn3

Abstract

Adiabatic demagnetization of PrIn3 was carried out and a lowest temperature of 2.1 mK was obtained. The observed temperature as a function of the demagnetizing field is well reproduced by assuming a value of -230 MHz for the quadrupole interaction constant of In, e2qQ/h. This value also gives a reasonable account of the recent specific heat data.
