Shifts in the energies of gold K X-rays and the role of the excitation mechanism

Abstract

The energies of the gold Kα1, Kα2 and Kβ1 X-ray lines are larger by 568, 567 and 620 meV, respectively, than those from electron-capture beta decay of 64 h 197Hg. It appears likely that these shifts are caused in part by unresolved satellite lines arising from the photo-ionization process.
