Abstract

The effects of stochastic perturbations on solitons propagation down an optical fibre are analysed. Two types of stochastic perturbations are considered, arising from local inhomogeneities in the fibbre material, and from spontaneous emissions in a fibre amplifier. For the former, the perturbation is purely dispersive. Its effect on the soliton parameters is readily evaluated, as are the properties of a background radiation field generated by the perturbation. For the latter, the perturbations are both dispersive and dissipative. With the assumption of a narrow amplifier bandwidth, a set of Langevin equations which describe evolution of the soliton parameters are obtained, whose main features are discussed.
