Abstract

Transport properties studies of Tl₂Ba₂Ca_n−1Cu₂O_x compounds with different doping levels have been performed. Resistivity, Hall effect and thermopower temperature dependencies were shown to be strongly dependent on doping level with respect to T_c(X) curve maximum.

Comparison of the hole concentration determined by transport measurement for the hole-doped cuprate superconductors

We have compared the hole concentration (P_pl) determined by hole-scale based on the thermoelectric power at RT (S²⁹⁰) to the hole concentrations (P) determined by two popular hole-scales based on the superconducting critical temperature (T_c) and Hall coefficient (R_H). While the hole concentrations based on different hole-scales are different, we show that when the P_pl is divided by either the effective unit cell volume (V_euc) which is the unit cell volume per one CuO₂ plane or the optimal hole concentration $(P_{pl}^{opt})$ we can find some correlation between P_pl and P. That is, the normalized $T_{c} (T_{c} / T_{c} (P_{pl}^{opt}))$ and the Hall number (1/eR_H) are well scaled with $P_{pl} / P_{pl}^{opt}$ and P_pl/V_euc, respectively. We find that the P_pl-scale can map to and reproduce the other two hole-scales if proper dimensionality and normalization are taken into account but not vice versa.

In this paper we present the results of complex quantitative analysis of thermopower data for Tl-based high-temperature superconductors in the framework of a phenomenological narrow-band model. On the basis of this model we have determined the parameters characterizing the band structure and properties of the charge-carrier system in the normal-state for samples of different phases and with different substitutions. The common tendencies in variations of these parameters with changing sample composition were revealed. We have analyzed the band spectrum transformation with increasing number of CuO₂ layers for n = 1–4 Tl-based HTSC’s with the optimally-doped compositions as well as in the underdoped and slightly overdoped regimes. Possible mechanisms of modification of the band responsible for the conduction process were proposed and their relative role in different cases was discussed in a comparison with the variations of the superconducting properties.
Influence of the doping level on the charge distribution among the inequivalent CuO<inf>2</inf> layers in Tl<inf>2</inf>Ba<inf>2</inf>Ca<inf>2</inf>Cu<inf>3</inf>O<inf>10-δ</inf> : A NMR study

$^{63} Cu$ and $^{17} O$ NMR measurements in the normal and superconducting states of Tl₂Ba₂Ca₂Cu₃O_10−δ with different δ are reported. In the overdoped Tl2223 sample with T_c=117 K (T_c^opt=123 K) and δ₁<δ^opt different temperature dependencies of the Knight shift $^{17} K$ are revealed for inequivalent CuO₂ layers. For the inner CuO₂ layer with the square oxygen coordination of Cu the decrease of $^{17} K$ with temperature is more gradual. In going towards the underdoped Tl2223 with T_c=104 K and δ₂>δ^opt the changes of $^{63,17} K$ with temperature are found to be the same for both types of copper layers. The quadrupole coupling constants for copper and oxygen from different CuO₂ layers were obtained. From the variations with doping of the valence contribution to the electric field gradient at copper sites, we estimate both the hole numbers at Cu and oxygen sites and the real concentration of mobile hole carriers n_h in each of inequivalent CuO₂ layers. In the overdoped Tl2223 sample the charge density in the inner layer differs from the one in the outer plane (with five-fold oxygen coordination for Cu). Our results show that the inhomogeneity of the charge distribution disappears in the underdoped regime. The results are compared with calculations of the charge distribution among the CuO₂ planes in multilayered cuprates reported by Haines and Tallon [E.M. Haines, J.L. Tallon, Phys. Rev. B 45 (1992) 3127].

The ⁶³Cu and ¹⁷O NMR were measured in oriented ceramic samples of Tl₂Ba₂Ca₂Cu₃O_10−δ with various Tc values in the normal and superconducting states. The quadrupole coupling constants for copper and oxygen from different CuO₂ layers were obtained. The doping variation of the valence contribution to the electric field gradient at the Cu site was used for estimation of the hole concentration. In the overdoped Tl2223 sample with T_c(δ₁) < T_c^opt(δ_opt>δ₁) the charge density in the inner layer (with four-fold oxygen coordination for Cu) differs from one in the outer plane (with five-fold oxygen coordination for Cu). Our results have shown that the inhomogeneity of the charge distribution disappears in the underdoping regime.
Normal state properties of high-T<inf>c</inf> oxides

We discuss the expected behavior of normal state properties of high-T_c oxides within the framework of the theory of hole superconductivity. The basic assumptions are: the normal state is a Fermi liquid, the bandwidth varies with carrier concentration, and the carrier concentration varies with temperature. We calculate the temperature and doping dependence of Hall number, resistivity, thermopower, magnetic susceptibility and nuclear spin relaxation rate, as well as the dependence of T_c on the hole concentration at room temperature. Some of our results exhibit remarkable qualitative agreement with experiment. Experiments that would test the key prediction of bandwidth expansion with hole doping are discussed.
