Abstract

Earlier studies of the light mass mercury isotopes have revealed new information regarding shape coexistence, super deformation and the interplay between collective and single particle degrees of freedom. Our recent experiments on 186Hg have revealed multiplicities of low lying bands, including one built on an 8 isomer, one quadrupole vibrational band. Our Compton polarimeter studies also changed the spins and parity of a previously reported band. This band has quite different intrinsic structure from any other seen in this region.
