Abstract

The construction and performance of a series of prototype delay lines 300 mm long are described. The lines were coupled to the cathode plane of a multiwire proportional chamber and their linearity and resolution measured for the detection of 6 keV X-rays from uncollimated 55Fe sources. The best resolutions (fwhm) obtained were 0.27–0.33 mm and 0.4–0.5 mm for magic and proportional gas mixtures, respectively. Linearities of the order of 0.30 mm (1σ) have been obtained.
