Abstract

A curved crystal spectrometer of the DuMond type is described. It permits the measurement of the energy difference between K X-ray lines from two different sources that are mounted on top of each other at a close distance in a special source holder so that the reflections overlap in angle. The instrument has been used in a series of investigations of new and numerically very small effects influencing the energies of K X-rays from elements with Z > 30. For source strengths of the order of 1 Ci and for counting periods of the order of a day or less the precision obtained was as good as 4 × 10−4 of the natural line width or, in units of the total energy 3 × 10−7.
