Abstract

Suspended particles in a street canyon were investigated by collecting air6particulate matter on thin filters at heights 2.3 to 20.5 m. The weather parameters and traffic characteristics were registered during the collection. Quantitative analysis of 15 trace elements from Al to Pb was carried out by the PIXE method using 1.8–2.0 MeV protons. The concentration of lead was found to decrease exponentially when going from street level to roof level. Almost all the trace elements analyzed were found to fall into two groups with different vertical distributions. The collected matter above 10 m height was found to be mainly to combustion originated motor vehicle exhaust, the matter below 10 m to soil originated dust.
