Abstract

A description of a solid state beam current digitizer is given. The digitizer measures currents from 1 nA to 10 μA by dc current amplification followed by a gated conventional integrator employing transistor discharge. Accuracies better than ± 0.15% over a 70 : 1 dynamic range are achieved inexpensively, and with a fast response analogue output.

A solid-state "leaky" integrator

The description of a solid-state “leaky” integrator is given. Beam currents in the range of 1 nA to 10 μA may be processed without the need to change the integration-capacitor-leak-resistor combination. The device has separate timing-pulse outputs for stopping the beam and for time-of-preset activation. A precision of 0.1% is achieved with activities having half lives down to 1 s. This figure degrades to 1% with a 100 ms half life, but can be reduced if necessary.
