Abstract

A resonance in the 52Cr(p, γ)53Mn reaction has been investigated as a probe for the quantitative determination of chromium depth distributions. The relevant nuclear parameters of this resonance were measured to be: resonance energy, Ep = (1005.2±0.2) keV, total width Γ < 100 eV, and resonance strength, (2J+1)ΓpΓγ/Γ = (0.89±0.11) eV. As an example of the use of the nuclear resonance technique, the chromium profile of an electroplated chrome black solar absorber surface has been studied and the results are presented.

It corresponds to isobaric analogue resonances (IARs) caused by the population of so-called isobaric analogue states in the compound nucleus. IARs usually have a decay scheme different from the background resonances, and unique primary gamma rays from the decay of IARs can be used for resonance profiling [13–14].
