Abstract

The C12(n, α)Be9 reaction leading to the ground state of Be9, has been studied using nuclear emulsions. The angular distribution of the emitted group of alphas is found to be asymmetric about 90° c.m. and indicates the presence of direct interaction. The distribution shows a prominent forward peak at about 30° and a comparatively slow rise in the backward direction. The total cross-section for the ground state transition is 69±13 mb. The theoretical fits to the experimental angular distribution have been discussed in terms of direct and exchange effects.
