Abstract

Absolute activation cross-sections for the reactions Cu63(n, α)Co60, Ni60(n, p)Co60, Ti46(n, p)Sc46 and Na23(n, 2n)Na22 were determined in the energy range 12.5 MeV to 16.5 MeV. Mono-energetic neutrons were obtained from the T(d, n)He4 reaction at 1 MeV deuteron energy. The very low induced specific activities were detected by a coincidence counting technique. For comparison, statistical model calculations from 5 to 20 MeV neutron energy were performed taking into account second particle emission.

For example, while the experimental cross-section value at the 14.7 MeV incident neutron energy is 166 mb for Molla and Qaim [44], and Koehler and Alford's result [60] is 324 mb at this energy. On the other hand, according to statistical analysis in Table 2, the obtained excitation function using the SFM from the threshold energy to 20 MeV is the most compatible with the experimental data [42,44,53,60–82]. The calculated excitation functions using different nuclear level density models for the 47Ti(n,p)47Sc reaction are presented in Fig. 3.

In the case of JENDL-3.3, the opposite choice was made, so that the JENDL-3.3 total inelastic cross-section is in agreement with measurements from Ref. [46] and the partial inelastic cross-section is discrepant with Refs. [19,20] (Figs. 7 and 8). In the case of the (n,2n) cross-section on 23Na, there are two distinct sets of experimental data (see Fig. 9), with a higher group consisting of measurements performed by Zhi-Zheng et al. [52] and Liskien et al. [53]. All previous evaluations except ENDF/B-VII.0 follow the lower group (which are also most recent and most extensive in terms of independent measurements and in terms of broader energy range).
